Supporting Your Success Every Step of the Way

Sandy PlefferAcademic Librarian

From research and academic writing to critical thinking and assessment preparation, our Academic Librarian outlines the skills you will need to develop to be successful in your studies.

Starting higher education can be both exciting and challenging. Whether you're writing your first essay, conducting research for an assessment, or trying to understand referencing requirements, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news is that LIHE students are not expected to navigate these challenges alone. We are here to support you to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed throughout your studies.

Success in higher education involves much more than completing assessments. It is about developing a range of academic skills that will help you become an independent learner, a confident communicator, and a critical thinker. These skills will not only support your academic success but will also prepare you for your future career.

Building a Strong Foundation for Success

Academic integrity is at the heart of learning at LIHE. It means producing work that reflects your own understanding while acknowledging the ideas and contributions of others. Through academic skills support, research guidance and learning resources, LIHE helps students develop the confidence and knowledge needed to maintain academic integrity and achieve their best.

Academic integrity underpins all aspects of higher education study. Developing skills in writing, research, referencing and critical thinking will help you uphold these principles while producing work that reflects your own learning and understanding.

Academic Writing Skills

Learning to write in an academic style is an important part of studying in higher education. Academic writing involves presenting your ideas clearly, supporting your arguments with reliable evidence, and correctly acknowledging the sources you use. While it may seem challenging at first, these skills become easier with practice. LIHE offers a range of resources, guides and personalised support to help you strengthen your academic writing, improve your referencing skills, and approach your assessments with confidence.

Strong academic writing begins with strong research. Once you understand how to communicate your ideas effectively, the next step is learning how to find and evaluate the information that will support your arguments.

Research Skills

Developing strong research skills will be important as you progress through your course. While your own experiences and opinions can help shape your understanding of a topic, academic assessments require you to support your ideas with evidence from credible and scholarly sources. Learning how to find, evaluate and use quality information will help you build stronger arguments and gain a deeper understanding of your subject area.

At LIHE, support is available to help you develop these important skills. From learning effective search strategies to identifying reliable and up-to-date sources, you can access guidance that will help you navigate the research process with confidence. Whether you're working on your first assignment or a major research project, you'll be supported in finding and evaluating information that strengthens your academic work.

Finding quality information is only part of the process. Successful students also learn how to analyse, evaluate and interpret information critically to develop well-supported conclusions and arguments.

Critical Thinking Skills

One of the most valuable skills you will develop during your studies is critical thinking. This skill plays an important role in every stage of the learning process, from researching and evaluating information to developing arguments and writing assessments. Beyond your studies, critical thinking is highly valued by employers and is an essential skill in many professional roles.

Critical thinking involves more than simply accepting information at face value. It means asking questions, analysing evidence, considering different perspectives, and making informed judgments based on the information available. Critical thinking helps you learn how to think independently and evaluate ideas with confidence.

As you progress through your studies, you will be encouraged to examine different viewpoints, assess the strength of evidence, and draw your own informed conclusions. These skills will help you produce stronger assessments, participate confidently in class discussions, and apply your knowledge in professional settings after graduation.
